In this powerful portrait, Andy Warhol meets us in unmistakable Keil manner – reinterpreted as a pop icon. The vibrant color fields in green, red and yellow symbolize Warhol’s artistic legacy, while the black background emphasizes his mysterious aura.
The distinctive gaze, the exaggerated lips, the smoking cigarette – all of this captures Warhol’s rebellion, irony, and self-staging.
Keil’s expressive gesture brings movement and intensity to the portrait, which shifts between admiration and deconstruction.
The composition exudes joie de vivre, directness, and artistic immediacy – a homage to color itself and an optimistic statement for any collection.
His artistically gifted mother endured the final phase of the war with her son, making their way to West Berlin, where the pair settled after the war. There Keil grew up in the working-class district of Berlin-Wedding and soon discovered his interest in painting – particularly in expressionist artists as well as the works of Pablo Picasso. The painter Otto Nagel, originating from East Berlin, became his mentor around 1954 and taught him first craft skills and painting techniques.
