Yixing teapot with poem, coins and bat decoration – China – 20th century
A finely crafted Chinese Yixing teapot of elegant, well-balanced form, decorated with a poetic inscription, coin motifs and a bat symbol. The bat (fu) is a traditional symbol of good fortune, while the coin motifs refer to prosperity and wealth. Together with the poetic inscription, the decoration expresses auspicious wishes connected to happiness, longevity and abundance.
The teapot is made of refined purple-brown Yixing clay with a smooth, well-fired surface and pleasing natural patina. The form is well proportioned with a gently rounded body, elegant curved handle and a nicely balanced spout. The lid fits well and the teapot pours correctly.
The quality of the clay and workmanship indicate a refined example from the mid 20th century, made in the traditional Yixing style. Such teapots were produced for the domestic Chinese market and for connoisseurs of tea culture.
Condition
Good overall condition. There is a small chip on the inner rim of the lid. This is not visible when the lid is placed on the teapot and does not affect the appearance when displayed. No cracks or restorations.
