Description
The Pioneer PD 91 is a rare top-of-the-line CD player that offers excellent audio performance and high-quality construction, allowing music enthusiasts a superior listening experience. Released in 1987, it was among Pioneer's last reference CD players before the stable-platter was adopted. Aesthetically, it features an elegant and sophisticated design, a minimalist front panel and a Liquid Crystal Display (LCD) that provides information on the track being played. Additionally, the PD-91 uses a separate power supply circuit for digital and analog audio, minimizing noise and interference.
One of the distinguishing features of the PD-91 is the PWY1004 high-precision magnetic-scan CD reading mechanism, which ensures accurate CD playback. Composed of a copper-plated honeycomb chassis, dual Burr Brown PCM-65 18-bit DACs with an 8x oversampling digital filter. Considered the world's first true 18-bit digital-to-analog converter. It supports a wide range of CD formats, including audio CDs, CD-Rs and CD-RWs.
Four separate power supplies feed the electronics via 11 voltage regulators. By contrast, a single digital reference frequency prevents interference that can be generated by the numerous timing circuits present in other players. An additional protection against external noise is the fluorescent display on the front panel, which can be turned off once the programming operations are finished. There are controls for random playback of tracks, the programming of 24 selections, the index number display, various repeat modes, automatic spacing (which adds three seconds to the gaps between selections), automatic programming for duplication onto a cassette (whose length is entered into the player, which programs all tracks that fit on one side of the cassette) and "time fade edit".
This latter check uses a feature that is rarely found on CD players: the ability to program based on time indications (minutes and seconds).
The majority of the front panel controls are replicated on the included remote control. It features controls for programming as many as eight segments of "musical windows" whose start and end points can be manually marked (typical phrase repetition functions allow the definition of a single window). In programming the feature, you can use the track-seek, index-seek and manual-scan controls to locate the desired passages. Each press on the MUSIC window marks a start or an end, even though the music continues to play during the process. When you then stop the player and press play again, the sequence of passages is recalled, neatly faded in at the start and end of each window. Also notable is the seamless joining of contiguous tracks in the normal programmed mode, indeed many other current models match the PD-91 in this capability.

Headphone jack with volume control.
