Medical instrument - Steel - Old tissue cutting blade
A truly unique and impressive item, microtome blade + original box. The blade is extremely sharp and has been in use decades ago at a Finnish pathology department. A dream item for a medical collection!
A microtome is a mechanical cutting device used to prepare tissue samples for microscopic examination, especially for the needs of pathology and histology. It allows very thin, uniform sections to be obtained from tissues, which can be stained and examined at the cellular level.
The development of the microtome began in the 1840s, when C. M. Topping introduced the first devices that enabled a precisely controlled cutting movement. Later, in the second half of the 19th century, H. Welcker and Wilhelm His improved the structure and operating principles, laying the foundation for modern histology. Thanks to these early innovations, the microscopic examination of tissues became much more precise and reproducible, and the microtome quickly became an indispensable tool in medical research.
