Description from the seller
Vertigo in Nantes is part of an artistic inquiry into the emotional shock caused by arriving in the city, after a passage through the open and tranquil landscapes of the Breton coast.
The canvas stages an accumulation of glances, conveying the sensation of being swept up by the crowd, observed, and carried along by the perpetual flow of the great city.
The vivid colors express the sensory and mental shock of the change in rhythm:
Red, omnipresent, symbolizes the violence of moving from a calm life to an intense, active urban existence, sometimes oppressive.
The other vivid colors retain that 'pep'—intoxicating, almost euphoric—quality of the city, between excitement and suffocation.
The work is nourished by the artist’s intimate experience, living in an old maid’s apartment in the very heart of Nantes:
the nocturnal clamor, the voices and laughter of drunken students under the windows, the repetitive rumble of the tram resonating in the walls become pictorial material.
Painting translates this sensory saturation — noise, movement, glances — that transforms the intimate space into porous territory, constantly traversed by the city.
Across his entire approach, Algo develops contemporary expressive painting, at the boundary between abstraction and figuration, where gesture, trace, and chromatic violence become vectors of emotional memory and lived experience.
