Black opals occur, just like their differently colored counterparts, as spherical to nodular masses with no discernible crystal structure. Their beauty usually reveals itself only after being cut. A characteristic of this form of opals is their opalescence, which manifests as a strong rainbow shimmer. Moreover, the host rock of the opal here is dark, grayish to black, which gave it this name.

Black opals form, just like other opals, from silica-rich fluids that crystallize in sedimentites or volcanic rocks. Their characteristic shimmer is due to water inclusions within the interior of this mineral.
