Description from the seller
This painting is part of the artist's latest works still available from the 2021 period, a distinct cycle in the artist's career, characterized by a high density of figures against transparent and vibrant backgrounds.
Entitled 'Le ciel dans l'eau' (The Sky in the Water), it is a unique work, directly from the artist's studio. Entirely hand-painted in acrylic on canvas, it is signed on the back and accompanied by a certificate of authenticity. In very good condition.
The photos are taken in natural light, as faithfully as possible to the true colors. The situational visuals allow appreciation of the painting’s dimensions and its physical presence. Proportions are preserved.
Created without a preliminary sketch, the composition is built in the act, through successive adjustments, until a “rightness” is reached: a balance between instinctive energy and controlled structure. This process gives the work a living tension and a pronounced presence.
With its monumental format of 180 x 155 cm, the painting asserts a strong presence. At this scale, the eye does not skim the image: it moves, explores, lingers. The density of the figures and the plays of transparency create a moving depth that transforms the perception of space. The canvas acts physically, like an active visual field that holds attention for a long time.
A German painter living in the south of France, trained from adolescence and then at the Academy of Fine Arts in Nürtingen (Germany) in the late 1980s, Ralf Altrieth has been exhibiting for over thirty years in France and Germany, notably at MAC Paris, the Theo de Seine gallery (Paris), and the Hartmut Beck gallery (Erlangen). His works are today in private collections around the world.
"Painting is something bigger than me. It allows me to go further, to see more. I now find that by painting I create myself." (Ralf Altrieth)
