Description from the seller
Sculptural group / Sculpture 'Angels with a pheasant' in Algora porcelain, 20th century – Madrid, Spain
Delicate sculptural group made in glazed porcelain in the mid-20th century signed “Algora”. This porcelain sculptural group shows two playful cherubs, also known as putti, in a dynamic interaction with a pheasant or similar bird. The figure is carefully modeled, with realistic details in the texture of the bird’s feathers and in the anatomy of the cherubs. One of the cherubs seems to caress the animal with its hand, while the other rests on the pheasant, creating an interesting visual balance that suggests movement. Complex composition and enormous dynamism. The chromatic treatment is based on the use of pearl white as the background, to which colored details are added in very soft tones. Painted by hand, a fine brush is used for the details of the face. The glazed finish gives a uniform shine and highlights the details. The expression of the cherubs and the naturalness of the scene reflect a Baroque style, approaching Rococo closely. The perfection in every detail, the care and the exquisite artisanal workmanship are evident.
On the base there is the Algora mark, made in the paste under glaze, a blue mark over glaze indicating "A HS", and an Algora sticker. The sculpture stands on a gilded wooden base. Overall good condition.
Vicente Sánchez Algora was one of the founders and masters behind the renowned Spanish producer of artistic porcelain known as Algora, which he founded together with his brother Manuel in the 1950s. Algora's factory gained great renown for its attention to detail and quality in decorative pieces, especially its porcelain sculptures, which range from angel figures to the well-known "gallos de pelea". This type of porcelain stands out for both its aesthetic beauty and its meticulous work of modeling and finishing, achieving a distinctive style that has been compared with the finest traditions of European artistic ceramics.
The life of Vicente Sánchez Algora was shaped not only by his commitment to ceramics but also by his foray into painting and art in general. Although his main focus was ceramics, throughout his career he also explored other artistic fields, but his passion and dedication to ceramics consumed much of his time and effort, thus contributing to his legacy as one of the great Spanish ceramists of the 20th century. Today, his son Manuel Sánchez-Algora continues to create artist-made ceramic figures, perpetuating the family legacy.
