Steiff mohair polar bear with collar & bell – wood wool filling – display piece from a collection liquidation

For sale is a very nice Steiff polar bear in classic design with the typical collar and bell.

The polar bear is made of light-colored mohair. The fur looks dense, well-groomed, and feels pleasant. The head is movable (disc joint) and can be rotated smoothly. The body is firm and maintains its shape.

When pressed lightly, the bear clearly crunches— a characteristic feature of a filling made from wood wool (Excelsior). This filling was used by Steiff mainly in the first half of the 20th century and is a classic quality hallmark of earlier models.

A button in the ear is not present. The ear itself is undamaged and shows neither a hole nor a tear. Without further markings, an exact dating is not possible, but the workmanship, the material, and the wood wool filling suggest an early manufacture in the 20th century.

The bear comes from a collection liquidation and was kept safely in a display cabinet for many years.
