An interesting Afro Basaldella gouache is presented, universally known as AFRO (1912-1976), one of the greatest Italian artists of the 20th century with international fame. This work on paper, signed and dated, measures 24x34 cm and is mounted on a frame of 48x58x2 cm, accompanied by the autentica of the Afro Archive with the code 00F147 handwritten on the back of the photograph that depicts it, and is in excellent condition. Provenance: Pandolfini Auction of 10/06/2010, Lot No. 56. It will be shipped insured by Poste Italiane.
Afro, born in Udine, trained himself mainly in Milan and, from 1950, in the United States where he developed his informal art. He received international recognition, taking part in major artistic events, from various editions of the Rome Quadriennale, Documenta in Kassel, the Venice Biennales where in 1956 he won the Prize for the Best Italian Artist. In 1957 he taught at Mills College in Oakland; in 1958 (the year of the work offered here) he obtained the commission to paint the large mural "The Garden of Hope" for UNESCO's Paris headquarters. In 1959-1960 he won the Pittsburgh Prize and the Prize for Italy at the Solomon Guggenheim in New York. He earned numerous other awards, and his works are housed in important museums: 25 museums in the Americas, 27 museums in Europe. After his premature death, the National Gallery of Modern Art in Rome paid him homage with a large retrospective, and in 1992 his complete works were exhibited at the Palazzo Reale in Milan."
