Laurent Casimir was a Haitian painter born on May 8, 1928, in Anse-à-Veau, and died in 1990.
He settles in Port-au-Prince in the late 1940s and is introduced to the Centre d'Art in 1947 by his friend, the painter Dieudonné Cédor. From 1950 to 1956, he frequents the Foyer des Arts Plastiques, founded by a group of intellectuals and modern artists, including Cédor.
Casimir was one of the instigators of a Haitian archetype, the market painting, which he painted using various shades of red, orange, and yellow.
