Description from the seller
Anton Lehmden. Nitra, 1929–2018 Vienna.
Bird and Fish. 1972.
Etching on paper.
Lower right hand-signed and dated “Lehmden 72”; in the plate, signed in mirror image. Image size 40 × 29 cm (15.7 × 11.4 in), sheet size 62.2 × 48.3 cm (24.5 × 19 in).
Anton Lehmden is regarded as one of the most important co-founders of the Vienna School of Fantastic Realism and helped shape Austrian post-war modernism with his meticulous drawing technique. His work is characterized by the visionary fusion of landscape, architecture, and organic decay processes.
• Graphic mastery: The present etching impresses with a highly intricate linework and fine hatching, which create an extraordinary sense of depth and dynamism in the contrast between the delicate birds and the massive fish body.
Central motifs of the body of work: The portrayal of birds and marine elements in the tension between becoming and vanishing is a recurring, essential subject in Lehmdens' graphic oeuvre.
• Biographical testimony of the mature phase: Created in 1972, the page documents Lehmdens's artistic peak, in which he perfected his characteristic "Metamorphosis Doctrine" technically and compositionally.
• Iconography & Symbolism: The contrast between the dynamic flight of the birds and the skeletal, static fish body functions as a memento mori and masterfully reflects the fragile balance of natural cycles.
• Condition: In good overall condition; outside of the cutout there are marginal discolorations as well as a minimal wear mark at the lower-right corner of the leaf edge.
• Market exclusivity: Etchings of this quality and format from the artist's main period of creation are highly sought-after collector's items and underscore Lehmdens' undisputed standing in the international auction market.
