Description from the seller
This concerns a colored copper engraving from the second half of the 18th century. The print is part of a series about the seven planets. Depicted is Jupiter, recognizable by his crown and the lightning bolts in his hand. Next to him is the zodiac sign Pisces.
The work was published in Augsburg by Georg Balthasar Probst and was hand-colored at the time of publication, as was customary for such prints.
In classical antiquity, all celestial bodies that did not move with the fixed starry sky were classified as planets. These seven ‘planets’ were symbolically represented as deities. Although at the time these engravings appeared it was already known that the sun and the moon do not revolve around the Earth, one nonetheless allowed oneself great artistic freedoms in classical and allegorical depictions.
