The young woman depicted in this painting is enraptured as she reads the pages of the blue-covered volume she holds in her hands; she is not posing for the viewer, but reading for herself. Luigi da Rios reveals his masterful ability to make the calm silence that surrounds the young woman the protagonist; his talent for Sentimental Realism, of which he is a great exponent, stands out. The soft light almost seems to come from the open book, gracefully illuminating the young woman's face and blond braids, which fall softly over her shoulders. BIOGRAPHY Born in Ceneda (Vittorio Veneto) in 1844, Luigi Da Rios trained as a carpenter as a child, then enrolled at the Academy of Fine Arts in Venice at the age of 15, where he immediately won numerous awards, distinguishing himself for his brilliant talent. He began his career by painting frescoes in prestigious villas and portraits of aristocrats. During the Risorgimento, in 1866, to avoid military conscription imposed by the Austrian administration of Venice, Luigi Da Rios disappeared and fled to Florence. There he studied the major masterpieces of the Renaissance. Fame came when he began painting genre scenes of everyday Venetian life, following the trend of sentimental, everyday, and emotional Realism. His works, authentic yet characterized by a sense of melancholy and sensitivity, achieved great success. He became an Academician of Merit in Venice, exhibited at the Royal Academy in London, and was a member of the Society of Watercolourists of Brussels. He died at just 48, in 1892, and is still recognized today as a great narrator of nineteenth-century Venice. La fama arrivò per lui quando iniziò a dipingere scene di genere della vita quotidiana di Venezia seguendo la corrente di un Realismo sentimentale, quotidiano ed emotivo. Le sue opere, vere ma caratterizzate da un senso di malinconia e sensibilità, conobbero grande successo. Divenne Accademico di Merito a Venezia, espose alla Royal Academy di Londra e fu membro della Società degli Acquarellisti di Bruxelles. Morì a soli 48 anni, nel 1892, ed è a tutt’oggi riconosciuto come un grande narratore della Venezia ottocentesca.
