Description from the seller
Clemens Briels – Stingray
Stingray is a dynamic and colorful work in which Clemens Briels applies his characteristic, imaginative visual language. Inspired by the shape and movement of a stingray, he translates the animal not realistically, but in an expressive, stylized composition full of rhythm and energy.
With powerful blocks of color, flowing lines and playful contrasts, Briels emphasizes the freedom and movement that are central to his work. As in much of his oeuvre, it is not about a faithful depiction of nature, but about emotion, imagination and the dialogue between form and color.
As is often the case in his oeuvre, he combines figurative elements with almost theatrical intensity. The work invites the viewer to reflect on the relationship between life, time and decay, but does so with the energy and visual strength that are characteristic of Briels’ art.
Clemens Briels, born in Son in 1946, is a highly sought-after artist at home and abroad. His artworks are included in several renowned art collections and he was the first Dutch artist to be chosen as Official Olympic Artist for the Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City in 2002.
Behind the artworks of Clemens Briels lies always a story: small anecdotes from a contrasting society. In his own style, Antipodism, he prefers to depict the opposite of the stereotype. Thus he confronts the viewer with a fantastical look at the everyday.
Inspired by his travels to the Orient, the Caribbean and North and South America, and by Latin American music such as son, mambo and merengue, Briels creates colorful, dynamic works. His art is timeless and cosmopolitan: color is his medium, the story his message.
Dimensions of the work with frame: 106 x 71 cm
Dimensions of the work without frame: 99 x 64 cm
