Description from the seller
Clemens Briels – Podane II
Podane II is a work by Clemens Briels that showcases his characteristic antipodistic visual language: colorful, playful and full of rhythm. In this piece, abstract shapes, contrast and composition take center stage, with elements that seem to dance and interact with one another.
Briels’ work does not aim for realistic representation, but rather to evoke visual energy and expression, inviting interpretation and dialogue with Podane II. The title suggests a continuation or variation on a previous composition (Podane I), which fits Briels’ exploration of forms and themes in a series.
Clemens Briels, born in Son in 1946, is a highly sought-after artist both at home and abroad. His works are included in diverse renowned art collections, and he was the first Dutch artist chosen as an Official Olympic Artist for the Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City in 2002.
Behind Clemens Briels’ artworks lies always a story; his works are small anecdotes from a contrasting society. Briels developed his own style, antipodism: he imagines the opposite of the stereotype, the learned. The viewer is confronted with a different, fantastic perspective on everyday things and is often surprised by what they see.
Briels depicts experiences he gained in the Orient, the Caribbean and North and South America. In addition, traditional Central and South American music provides an almost inexhaustible source of inspiration. The Cuban son, mambo, merengue and the souk, music tones drenched in a light erotic sauce, compel him to create intriguing paintings.
Clemens Briels’ artworks are never bound to time and reflect universal themes, cosmopolitan imaginings of daily life. Briels translates his experiences in his own way, in his own unique fantasy world. Color is the tool, the story is his message. The artist stimulates the viewer’s imagination by showing different images than those we are led to see. Since we have learned stereotypes by default rather than imaginative interpretations of surrounding things and events, the viewer is confronted with surprises.
