Description from the seller
Juego table, mahogany wood, Directory, circa 1800 – France
Elegant and timeless mahogany game table with a crescent shape from the Directory period, late 18th century. It rests on legs with pilasters topped with wooden pads. Features a refined and classic green felt gaming surface.
Its curved silhouette, fluted legs and discreet drawer reflect the Neoclassical aesthetic characteristic of late 18th and early 19th century design. Its balanced proportions and sober details make it ideal as a desk, console, side table, or gaming table in both classic and contemporary interiors. It shows almost no ornamental details, as the beauty of the piece lies in the wood itself, with warm tones and pronounced grain.
The felt surface provides a practical and luxurious work area, while the drawer offers subtle storage without altering the clean lines. When fully extended, the table reaches a diameter of 110 centimeters. It can also be placed with the upper half opened and resting against the wall, as shown in the photo, creating a highly decorative and sophisticated look.
The Directory style is a furniture and decorative arts style developed in France during the period when the Directory (1795–1799) was in effect, marking the transition between the Louis XVI and Empire styles. It is a Neoclassical-inspired style, characterized by its simple lines inspired by Roman objects of the 1st century AD from the excavations of Pompeii and Herculaneum. This revival of classical taste persisted in painting, furniture and fashion, especially in women's clothing.
During this period, France experienced significant political and social changes, which were reflected in furniture with a more rational and functional approach. Symmetry in the design of the drawers and the furniture’s overall balanced proportion are key features of classical furniture of these eras. Unlike earlier styles such as Rococo, Directory is characterized by more restrained decoration. The drawer pulls and the legs feature simple geometric details and classical motifs.
