The Dewan, was written by Mohammed Shama od-din Hafez (1329-1399), a Sufi Muslim who practised a mystical form of Islam. His name 'Hafez' was given to those Muslims who could recite the Holy Koran by heart. The Divān is a celebrated collection of 14th-century Persian ghazals, blending romantic passion with profound Sufi mysticism. Using metaphorical wine and longing, Hafez explores divine love, the beauty of nature, and spiritual ecstasy. The poems often critique hypocrisy while celebrating human emotion, joy, and the journey toward unity.
