Rare Metoko wooden masque from the Democratic Republic of the Congo, dating to the mid-20th century, measuring 34 cm high by 1 cm wide and 1 cm deep, in excellent condition, from a private collection and without a stand.
Description from the seller
The Metoko (or Mituku) masks originate from the southeast of the Democratic Republic of Congo, where the Metoko people, descended from a legendary migration of the Lega, live around the Bukota cult. Carved in wood, they feature parallel lines engraved to recall tribal scarifications. Used mainly at funerals and initiation rites, these masks embody the status of an elder who has fallen victim to sorcery or an honored ancestor. Their abstract, at once dynamic and austere style reflects artistic influence close to the Lega while asserting a distinct identity. These pieces are today regarded as masterpieces of Congolese sculptural heritage.
