Description from the seller
Jan Cremer – Tulips of the North
In Tulips of the North, Jan Cremer portrays the tension between origin and freedom. With his distinctive, powerful style he shows the restless life of an artist, full of passion, longing and international influences.
Jan Cremer, writer and artist, was born in 1940 in Enschede. His father died in 1942, which meant that Jan's upbringing fell entirely to his mother. Jan's mother, Rosza Csordás Szomorkay, was Hungarian and studied at the conservatory in Budapest. After the war, Jan Cremer was placed by child protection in foster families and colony houses. In the fifties he held all sorts of jobs, served with the Marines and worked for a time as a sailor on the high seas. In 1958 he spent several months studying at the art academies in Arnhem and The Hague. Cremer lived on Ibiza for a time and left for New York in 1964. Thereafter he alternated living between America and Europe. As a writer, Cremer instantly became famous with "I, Jan Cremer" (1964). It is a picaresque novel with sex, violence and adventure. As a result, the literary merit of his authorship was not regarded as very high by everyone. The novel was kept out of libraries for a long time. "I, Jan Cremer" appeared in many languages. In addition to novels, Jan Cremer wrote travelogues and plays. Jan Cremer's art consists of paintings, graphics and gouaches and his works often depict Dutch, and also Italian, landscapes in vivid colors.
