Ancient Egypt Large Taweret amulet - 6.6 cm

This amulet from Ancient Egypt, dating from the Late Period (722 - 332 BC), represents the Goddess Thoeris (Tueris, Taweret), a protective deity linked to fertility, motherhood and childbirth. Thoeris was widely venerated in Egyptian homes and was credited with the power to protect pregnant women and children, as well as offering protection against evil forces. This type of amulet was used both in everyday life and in the funeral sphere, ensuring the protection of the deceased in the afterlife. The amulet is made of faience, a glassy ceramic material very characteristic of Egyptian crafts, especially in the manufacture of small devotional and ritual objects. Its greenish-blue colour is typical of this material, associated with water, regeneration and eternity. The figure is 6.6 cm high, with a width and depth of 2 cm, dimensions that make it a portable piece, possibly used as a pendant thanks to the hole drilled in the top of its head. Iconographically, the amulet presents the traditional form of Thoeris, with a hybrid hippopotamus body standing upright on its hind legs, a bulging belly and prominent breasts, which emphasizes its relationship with pregnancy and fertility. Its face retains the typical features of a hippopotamus, with a rounded snout and small ears. The figure wears a striated wig, a common element in the representation of Egyptian deities. Its arms are human and hang at its sides with its hands closed, a detail that provides rigidity and symmetry to the sculpture. The state of preservation is excellent, with well-defined details and no visible fractures, allowing one to appreciate the quality of the manufacture and the durability of the material used. This amulet is not only a representative example of Egyptian religiosity, but also a sample of the refined art of faience in the late period of Egypt. Provenance: Acquired from a French private collection, R.P in the 80's. - The piece includes authenticity certificate. The Seller can prove that the lot was obtained legally. Important information.
