THE COMPLETE SET of the Kertesz's prints hadn't been seen for 40 years (showing for the first time in 1932, published in book form for the first time in 1976).

Earlier that year Kertesz had been asked by the French magazine "Le Sourire" to create a series of images of women and, out of the dreamlike "distortions" he had perceived as a young man watching swimmers move through the water, these pictures evolved. Four years later a number of them were exhibited in New York at the Museum of Modern Art, and again caused a furor."
