Description from the seller

Refined pair of lacquered chairs in red and gold

Italy / France, late 19th –
Napoleonic III taste with hints of Louis XVI

Fascinating pair of period chairs with a strong visual impact, made between the late 19th and the early 20th century, expression of late 19th-century decorative taste inspired by the Napoleonic III style with elegant echoes of Louis XVI.

The wooden structure is embellished with a vivid red lacquer finish, enhanced by refined gold details that emphasize the profiles, moldings, and turned elements. The slightly curved backrest, with a double crossbar and columns enriched with small gilded spheres, gives dynamism and formal balance.

The turned legs, joined by crossbars with a central gilded spherical element, provide stability and harmony to the composition.

The contrast between the deep red and gold creates a sophisticated decorative effect, ideal for classic, eclectic, Hollywood Regency interiors or representative residences.

The upholstered seat is covered in decorative fabric (likely redone in the 20th century). Under the seat, traditional jute straps and artisanal workmanship are visible, evidence of period construction.

Conditions

Good overall condition for the age.
Natural signs of wear are present, with slight abrasions and small losses to the gilding and lacquer, consistent with more than a century of life. In both chairs, a top knob is missing as shown in the photo. Some of the backrest spindles are fragile and may require restoration. Solid and stable structure. Wear to the upholstery.
