Wooden scepter - Adan - Togo

A grand and unusual Adan scepter from Togo. It is rare to see an Adan object of this style; it is the first I have seen in 15 years. Objects from Ghana, Togo and Nigeria are my specialty.

The sculpture is dynamic and lively. There is movement in this work. The whole has its own balance, in a beautiful asymmetry!

The central figure is absorbed, immersed in the parallel worlds of spirits. It is draped in cloth. Beneath, two figures support it. This object draws us into a naïve and dreamlike universe.

The sculpture is simplified and schematic; there is a primal force emanating from this object. Beautiful dry patina, with traces of dried blood in places. It is an ancient object; the wood and patina attest to that. A fine, old and authentic collectible piece. Circa 1950.
