—————————

Marcel Poggioli was born in Marseille, where his father, originally from Carbuccia, had settled to pursue the profession of seaman.

Very early on drawn to art, he studied at the Beaux-Arts in Marseille before refining his training in Italy, first in Florence then in Rome. He then continued his apprenticeship at the École nationale supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris, before returning to settle in his native region.

An active artist, he participated in numerous Marseille exhibitions and regularly presented his works at the various Paris salons. He also answered important decorative commissions, both public and private, in Marseille as well as in Corsica, and frequently collaborated on illustrations for journals and books.

In 1921, the former student of the Beaux-Arts of Marseille was named professor of drawing and decorative arts, a position he held until 1948. Deeply attached to Corsica, he stayed there whenever possible in his apartment-studio in Ajaccio. He also owned a house located between Porto and Sagone, where he would reside most often after leaving his Marseille post.

Marcel Poggioli thus remains a figure both Corsican and Provençal, a painter deeply Mediterranean, whose inspiration is nourished by the subtle light of ports and calanques, here as elsewhere.
