Description from the seller

Anthropomorphic Vase Cosanga-Panzaleo

Incised Decor - Panzaleo Culture (Ecuador)

Integration Period (c. 500 – 1500 CE)

18 cm x 16.5 cm

Very good overall condition. Natural surface wear, earthy concretions of origin. No apparent restoration.

This piece comes from the central highlands of Ecuador (Cotopaxi and Tungurahua provinces).

Globular vessel with a wide neck, flanked by two sturdy and elegant ribbon handles. The neck and shoulder are adorned with applied discs (protuberances) forming a stylized face or bodily attributes, an emblematic feature of this culture. Complex incision work presenting geometric chevron and jagged-line motifs, delimiting dotted areas. The contrast between the red engobe at the base and the lighter upper part emphasizes the dynamism of the composition.

Panzaleo pottery objects were highly valued prestige items in pre-Hispanic Ecuador. Because of their lightness and refined aesthetics, they were the subject of intensive exchange networks between the Sierra and the Amazon. This piece testifies to the technical mastery of Andean artisans before the arrival of the Incas in the region.
Piece submitted for expert opinion and acquired at a catalogued auction; a duplicate of the invoice attesting to its authenticity will be attached to the package.

The seller guarantees and can prove that the object was obtained legally. The seller was informed by Catawiki that they had to provide the documentation required by the laws and regulations in their country of residence.
