In this expressive self-portrait, the German Neo-Expressionist Peter Robert Keil appears as directly and uncompromisingly as his art itself: spontaneous, powerful, and full of energy.
The face is divided into two contrasting color fields – one intense red meets cool blue. This confrontation creates a strong tension and gives the portrait a nearly mask-like presence. The bold black lines around the eyes, nose, and mouth form Keil’s distinctive handwriting.
The cigarette in the corner of the mouth is more than a detail: it stands symbolically for the artist’s life between the studio, bohemia, and artistic freedom – a recurring motif in Keil’s portraits.
With his immediate, almost raw painting style, a portrait full of personality and authenticity emerges – a rare and particularly personal work by the artist.
The composition radiates joie de vivre, directness, and artistic immediacy – a homage to color itself and an optimistic statement for any collection.
His artistically talented mother fought to move with her son to West Berlin in the final phase of the war, where the two settled after the war. There Keil grew up in the working-class district of Berlin-Wedding and soon discovered his interest in painting – especially in expressionist artists and the works of Pablo Picasso. The painter Otto Nagel, who came from East Berlin, became his mentor from around 1954 and taught him early craft skills and painting techniques.
