A pair of antique Napoleon III period Louis XV style bedside tables from France, c. 1850–1900, in wood with marble tops and exotic veneer, featuring gilded bronze mounts, each 40 cm wide, 30 cm deep and 74 cm high, in good used condition with minor signs of age and stains.
Description from the seller
This extraordinary pair of Napoleon III period bedside tables represents an absolute pinnacle of French cabinetmaking in the mid-19th century, faithfully witnessing the opulent taste and decorative abundance characteristic of the Second Empire. Hailing from a prestigious noble residence, these pieces stand out for their exceptional construction quality and for the skilful use of the finest materials, originally intended for contexts of the highest representation. The structure, moved with extreme elegance, is clad in a refined parquetry of exotic woods arranged in a herringbone and mirror pattern, creating a play of light and grain with great visual depth, typical of Parisian workshops the most renowned of the period.
The bronze-gilt and chiselled decorative apparatus is of rare finesse and defines the entire silhouette of the furniture: splendid applications with foliate motifs and volutes run along the uprights, while the elegant handles and drawer escutcheons are small masterpieces of micro-sculptural metalwork. The top is crowned by precious marbles of notable thickness, perfectly shaped to follow the curvilinear contour of the structure. The legs, slender and sinuous, terminate with finely worked bronze sabot, imparting the whole with a stability that never sacrifices aesthetic lightness. Owning a pair of this calibre means embedding in one’s environment a fragment of imperial history, capable of ennobling a bedroom or a drawing room with an aura of enduring prestige and noble dignity.
