Pentti Sarpaneva bronze Brutalist pendant with an agate cabochon on a matching chain, Finland, circa 1960–1970.
Description from the seller
Pentti Sarpaneva – Bronze Brutalist necklace with pendant and Agate – Finland, ca. 1960–1970
A distinctive and sculptural bronze pendant designed by the Finnish artist and designer Pentti Sarpaneva (1925-1978), one of the leading figures of post-war Scandinavian jewelry design.
The pendant is made of solid bronze and features a powerful, organic form strongly influenced by the Brutalist design movement of the 1960s. In the center is a beautifully polished agate band, whose natural layered pattern creates a subtle play of light and depth. The stone is framed by an expressive, nearly botanical bronze structure reminiscent of leaves or a natural wreath.
Sarpaneva was known for his sculptural approach to jewelry: each design was conceived as a small work of art. His work was often produced by the Finnish silver and jewelry manufacturer Turun Hopea, which realized many of his iconic designs.
On the reverse there is a clear stamp:
P. Sarpaneva – Finland – Bronze
A signature that is typical of his bronze jewelry from the 1960s and 1970s.
The pendant comes with a matching chain and forms a striking design object that can be worn or kept as a collectible within a collection of Scandinavian modernism.
Dimensions
Length of pendant: ca. 9.5 cm
Width of pendant: ca. 5.2 cm
Length of chain: ca. 62 cm
Weight: 59.1 grams
Condition:
Excellent pre-owned vintage condition with minimal patina appropriate to the age. The patina on the bronze is nicely intact and emphasizes the characteristic texture of the design. The agate stone is intact and original. It will be shipped by smart, secure registered mail with insured delivery.
