Vase - alpacca silvered nickel - Maclean clan

Elegant decorative jug from the late 19th – early 20th century, made of nickel silver (alpacca), a white metal alloy historically used as an alternative to silver. The body features a rich relief decoration of diamond-shaped panels with stylised floral motifs, produced through mechanical stamping typical of late-19th-century historicist decorative metalwork. On both sides there is an applied heraldic badge depicting a stylised plant and a scroll bearing the motto “ALTERA MERCES”, identifiable as the emblem associated with the Clan Maclean. The heraldic element appears to have been used decoratively, in keeping with the eclectic revival styles popular in Europe during the period. The hinged lid, finely engraved with geometric and floral motifs, retains the original white metal colour on the interior, while the exterior displays a natural aged patina resulting from oxidation over time. The handle is fitted with insulating bone inserts, a functional feature often found on vessels intended for serving hot beverages.
