Description from the seller

Mata Hari was one of the most mysterious and famous women of the early twentieth century. Her life combined fame, seduction, politics, and espionage.

Early Life

She was born in 1876 in the Netherlands with the real name Margaretha Geertruida Zelle.
When she was young, she married a Dutch army officer and lived for a time in the Dutch colony in Indonesia. The marriage eventually failed, and her life took a new direction.

Becoming “Mata Hari”

After returning to Europe, she moved to Paris and began performing exotic dances under the stage name Mata Hari.
The name “Mata Hari” comes from the Malay language and means “Eye of the Day” or “Sun.”

She quickly became famous in Paris because:
• Her dances were presented as mysterious and oriental
• Her costumes and performances were bold and captivating
• She often appeared in aristocratic and military social circles

Relationships with Powerful Men

Mata Hari had relationships with officers, diplomats, and influential men. Because of these connections, she was later accused of spying.

Accusation of Espionage

During World War I, France accused her of working as a spy for Germany.
It was claimed that she gathered military information through her relationships with officers.

However, many historians today believe that:
• The evidence against her was weak
• She may have been a scapegoat during the war

Trial and Death

In 1917, she was tried in France and sentenced to death by firing squad.
According to a famous story, she refused a blindfold and looked calmly at the soldiers before the execution, which later became part of her legend.

Legacy

Mata Hari became a symbol of:
• The mysterious and seductive woman (femme fatale)
• The legendary spy
• A woman who may have been a victim of politics and war
