In this black-and-white lithograph, Corneille presents a fantastical park landscape. With flowing lines and stylized forms of animals and people, he creates a playful, almost surreal world. Corneille (1922-2010) was a painter and graphic artist who radicalized the conservative Dutch art world in the early fifties. Corneille attended drawing and etching courses at the Academy of Fine Arts in Amsterdam between 1940 and 1942, but is generally regarded as an autodidact painter. Initially strongly influenced by Picasso, Corneille produced abstract work. From the late sixties, Corneille's work took on a more figurative character.
