Description from the seller
Clemens Briels, born in Son in 1946, is a highly sought-after artist both domestically and internationally. His works are included in various renowned art collections, and he was the first Dutch artist to be elected as Official Olympic Artist for the Winter Games in Salt Lake City in 2002.
Behind Clemens Briels' artworks lies always a story; his works are small anecdotes from a counter-society. Briels developed his own style, ANTIPODISM: he envisions the opposite of the stereotype, the learned. The viewer is confronted with another, imaginative perspective on everyday things and is often surprised as a result.
Briels portrays experiences he gained in the Orient, the Caribbean, and North and South America. In addition, traditional Central and South American music is an almost inexhaustible source of inspiration. The Cuban son, mambo, merengue, and the souk, with a lightly erotic sheen on the musical tones, compel him to create intriguing paintings.
Clemens Briels' works are never bound to a specific time and express universal themes, cosmopolitan imaginings of daily life. Briels translates his experiences in his own way, in his own unique fantasy world. Color is the tool, the story is his message. The artist stimulates the viewer's imagination by showing different images than we are expected to see. Since we are raised on stereotypes and not on imaginative interpretations of the surrounding things and events, the viewer is often confronted with surprises.
