Igor Gubskiy - Napoleon

This oil on canvas depicts Napoleon Bonaparte in a surprisingly contemporary way: with a wink. While Napoleon is usually depicted in art history as a stern, heroic general, Igor Gubsky breaks through this traditional image with a playful and slightly ironic gesture. The wink gives the portrait a human and almost mischievous quality, as if the emperor is aware of his legendary status and treats it with a lighthearted air. The loose, expressive brushstrokes and vibrant use of color give the work a vibrant energy. Gubsky combines classical painting techniques with a modern interpretation of historical figures. This creates a tension between history and the contemporary perspective: admiration and perspective coexist here. The painting invites the viewer to see Napoleon not only as an icon of power, but also as a human being—with character, humor, and vulnerability. About the artist – Igor Gubsky (1954) Igor Gubsky was born on June 11, 1954, in Kadievka, Ukraine, and grew up in a family of artists; his father was a painter. He studied at the art school in Voroshilovgrad and later at the Kyiv State Art Institute, where he trained in painting in the studios of Victor Puzyrkov and Sergei Grigoriev, among others. Gubsky is considered a significant representative of 20th-century Ukrainian painting and is listed with the United Art Rating (4A). His work is included in renowned museum collections, including the National Art Museum of Ukraine, the State Tretyakov Gallery in Moscow, and the Malmö Art Museum in Sweden, as well as in numerous international private collections. His works have also been successfully auctioned by Christie's and Phillips, among others. In his oeuvre, Gubsky combines craftsmanship with a personal, sometimes playful approach to people and history – something that is clearly visible in this portrait of Napoleon.
