Original work by Jan Cremer. In honor of his exhibition: Jan Cremer as painter (The Hague period 1958-1962) at Galerie Nouvelles Imges in The Hague.

Cremer has in various exhibition booklets produced a beautiful body of work.

Jan Cremer, writer and artist, was born in 1940 in Enschede. His father died in 1942, which meant that all of Jan’s upbringing was handled by his mother. Jan’s mother, Rosza Csordás Szomorkay, was Hungarian and studied at the conservatory in Budapest. After the war Jan Cremer was placed in foster homes and colony houses by child protection services. In the fifties he held various jobs, served with the marines, and for some time worked as a sailor on the open waters. In 1958 he attended a program at the art academy in Arnhem and The Hague for a few months. Cremer lived for a while on Ibiza and left in 1964 for New York. Afterwards he lived alternately in America and Europe. As a writer Cremer rose to fame overnight with "I, Jan Cremer" (1964). It is a picaresque novel with sex, violence and adventure. Because of this the literary quality of his writing was not regarded as very high by everyone. The novel was kept out of libraries for a long time. "I, Jan Cremer" appeared in many languages. In addition to novels, Jan Cremer wrote travelogues and plays. Jan Cremer’s art consists of paintings, graphics and gouaches and sculptures, often depicting Dutch, and also Italian, landscapes in vivid colors.
