Description from the seller

Johannes Theodorus (Jan) Toorop, also: Jean Theodor Toorop, was born in Poerworedjo (Dutch East Indies) on 20 December 1858 and died in The Hague on 3 March 1928.
The father of Charley Toorop is one of the leading Dutch avant-garde painters of the decades before and after 1900.
He painted, watercoloured, etched and drew landscapes, figures, nudes and portraits. Initially he painted in an impressionist style, but through pointillism he became a Symbolist painter. He was also active as a portraitist and designed ceramics, advertising posters, and book bindings. Dutch Art Nouveau is often associated with his work. In the last twenty years of his life he was strongly inspired by Roman Catholicism.
