Description from the seller
An important original engraving by Francesco Bartolozzi after an invention by Guercino, taken from the famous series of prints from the drawings of the Emilian master published in Rome in 1764.
The work, known as “A Sacrifice,” depicts a sacred scene with a priest about to perform a ritual sacrifice, flanked by assisting figures and by a ram destined for the offering, in a composition that is typically Baroque, dynamic and theatrical.
The engraving is part of the collection “Raccolta di alcuni disegni del Barberi da Cento detto il Guercino,” one of the most important eighteenth-century series devoted to the etching translation of Guercino’s drawings, which contributed decisively to the European diffusion of his artistic language.
