Jan Roëde – Les Amants, a hand-signed screen print in a limited edition (3/100) dating from 1950–1960, with image size 38 × 42 cm and framed size 67 × 70 cm.
Description from the seller
Jan Roëde (1914–2007) was a versatile Dutch artist active as a painter, draftsman, illustrator, glass artist, costume designer and writer of stories and poems. During a stay in Paris in 1948 he changed his name from Jan Roede to Jan Roëde, a name he continued to use thereafter. His work developed from an abstract style with loose lines and planes to colorful compositions with simplified human and animal figures in expressive, unreal colors. He drew inspiration among others from Zen philosophy and the color usage of Maurice Estève. Although his work showed parallels to the Cobra movement, he declined an invitation to join Cobra because he found the group too rough. Roëde was connected to, among others, the Haagsche Kunstkring, the Posthoorngroep and Pulchri Studio, won in 1968 the Jacob Hartog Prize and exhibited nationally and internationally. His oeuvre is counted among the Nieuwe Haagse School.
