Description from the seller
This is a portrait of Erwin Olaf, titled Hans, from the Ladies Hats series. For this series Olaf drew inspiration from the fact that men nowadays hardly wear hats, even though headwear played an important role in Western art history for centuries. Inspired by Rembrandt’s chiaroscuro, he created striking portraits of men wearing extravagant women's hats. The subjects look directly at the viewer with powerful, sometimes seductive gazes, with elegance and theatrical poses at the center.
Behind the stylish appearance lies a deeper message. By playing with androgyny and gender roles, Olaf rebels against the dominant macho culture and heteronormative thinking. The series, which he began in 1985 and revisited in 2018, primarily celebrates the freedom to be different.
Erwin Olaf (1959–2023) was an internationally renowned Dutch photographer, known for his meticulously staged photography in which every detail was carefully directed. Themes such as beauty, sexuality, identity and transience played a major role in his work. He gained worldwide recognition and, among other things, photographed the Dutch royal family.
