Description from the seller
Dimensions: 84 x 60
Cibachrome print
This is a photograph by Dutch photographer Ruud van Empel. The work shows a boy in a green suit looking straight at the camera. The intense gaze and the carefully constructed composition are characteristic of Van Empel’s oeuvre, in which reality and construction subtly merge.
Until the mid-1990s, Van Empel created his photographic assemblages with traditional collage techniques, cutting, pasting, and retouching images. From 1995 he switched to a digital process and began assembling his conceptual photography with the help of the computer. By using a vast collection of self-made digital photos, he changed the face of digital fine-art photography.
Based on art-historical references, Van Empel developed a wholly original genre within photography. He himself speaks of the “construction of a photographic image” or “photo-objects.” Although he works with photo montages, he does not use so-called morphing techniques. Instead, he aims for convincing naturalism and realism, rather than a surrealist approach. The artificiality remains visible, but the final image nonetheless forms a credible, autonomous reality.
Van Empel’s works are entirely built from photographs he makes himself and then digitally combines. The camera remains the foundation of his practice; every shot constitutes a building block within his compositions. His works are constructed in meticulous detail, with each element carefully placed. This gives his images an almost idealized perfection. Although his work is created with the most modern digital techniques, it transcends time-bound trends and addresses universal themes such as innocence, beauty, identity, and memory.
