This portrait was created in 2004 by Erwin Olaf as part of a series of portraits of Dutch-M Moroccan youths and adults in the Netherlands. In this series Olaf portrays his subjects in an engaging and respectful manner, with identity, culture, and personal presence at the center. As is often the case in his work, he combines a carefully staged style with a strong human presence.
Erwin Olaf (1959–2023) was an internationally renowned Dutch photographer, known for his meticulously staged photography in which every detail was precisely directed. Themes such as beauty, sexuality, identity, and transience played an important role in his work. He gained worldwide recognition and, among other things, photographed the Dutch royal family.
