Biography:
Chagall was born on July 7, 1887 in Liozna in the Voblast of Vitebsk, in Belarus (which then belonged to the Russian Empire), into a Hasidic Jewish family. The town has a sizable Jewish community. His mother kept a grocery shop and his father was a sweeper/loader at the Janchnin herring warehouse, while his grandfather was a tutor and cantor at the synagogue.

Sa mère tenait une épicerie et son père était ouvrier saumurier à l'entrepôt de harengs Janchnin, tandis que son grand-père était précepteur et chantre à la synagogue.
