Description from the seller
Instrument etrange | ANTONI CLAVÉ
This is a piece from a representative print series from the 1980s that combines abstract expression with precise printmaking techniques. Clavé was deeply involved with music and theater (stage design) throughout his life. In this series, objects with literally "strange (étrange)" shapes contain stretched strings and worn textures, evoking primitive sounds and melodies echoing in silence.
Artist Profile:
Born in Barcelona, Spain in 1913. While working as a painter's apprentice from the age of 13, attended evening art school. Began drawing magazine illustrations and advertising posters, but dedicated himself to painting at the age of 18. In 1936, participated in the Spanish Civil War as a soldier for the Popular Front. Following the defeat of the Popular Front in 1939, fled to Montparnasse, France, where he painted works sympathetic to Bonnard and others, but in 1944 met his fellow countryman and senior, Picasso, and received a decisive influence. Gained international acclaim starting in the 1950s and held exhibitions in various locations. After winning awards at the Venice Biennale in 1956 and the São Paulo Biennale the following year, was selected as the Spanish representative at the Venice Biennale in 1984, active in various fields including not only painting but also objects, sculpture, and printmaking. Passed away in 2005.
