Instrument étrange | ANTONI CLAVÉ
This artwork belongs to a print series created primarily in the 1980s, combining abstract expression with detailed printmaking techniques. In this series, objects in strange (étrange) shapes are depicted with elements such as taut strings and worn textures, evoking primitive sounds or melodies.
Artist Profile:
Born in Barcelona, Spain in 1913. Apprenticed as a house painter at age 13 while attending night art school. Began creating magazine illustrations and advertising posters, then dedicated himself to painting at age 18. Fought as a soldier for the Popular Front in the Spanish Civil War in 1936. Fled to Montparnasse, France in 1939 following the defeat of the Popular Front, where he created works reflecting affinity with Bonnard. Met his fellow countryman Picasso in 1944, receiving a decisive influence. Gained international acclaim from the 1950s, holding exhibitions globally. Received awards at the Venice Biennale in 1956 and the São Paulo Biennale the following year. Selected as the representative for Spain at the Venice Biennale in 1984. Active across various artistic fields including painting, objects, sculpture, and printmaking. Passed away in 2005.
