Hoang Anh Biography
Born in 1984 in Thanh Hoa, Vietnam; lives and works in Hanoi
Originally from Thanh Hoa province, located 150 km south of Hanoi, Hoang Anh belongs to this pivotal generation of Vietnamese artists (the 8x generation) who combine cultural heritage with contemporary abstraction. A graduate of the Vietnam Fine Arts University, he established himself on Hanoi’s art scene with a bold approach to material and color.
Graduated from the Artistic Talents program (class of 13) at Thanh Hoa College of Culture and Arts
Graduated from the Painting Department (class of 48) at the Vietnam Fine Arts University
Style and Artistic Approach
Hoang Anh’s work is distinguished by an intense exploration of texture and movement. While he explores varied themes such as landscapes, nature, and the feminine figure, it is in abstraction that he reveals his full expressive power:
• The energy of the gesture: A practitioner of oil and acrylic painting, he frequently uses a palette knife to apply color with vigorous horizontal brushstrokes. This gesture creates a rhythm almost musical on the canvas.
• Chromatic contrasts: His work plays on the opposition between often neutral backgrounds (urban grays, textured whites) and flashes of primary colors — blazing reds, solar yellows, and deep blues — that seem to burst from the surface.
• Lyric abstraction: His compositions do not attempt to reproduce reality, but to capture its emotional essence. His canvases often evoke ephemeral phenomena: the reflection of light on water, the vibration of heat, or the bustle of a metropolis in flux.
Exhibitions and Recognition
An active and recognized artist, Hoang Anh regularly exhibits in Hanoi’s prestigious galleries and within national art collectives. His works are part of numerous private collections, both in Vietnam and internationally, seducing by their ability to translate an Oriental sensibility into a universal and modern language.
"Painting is, for me, a breath, a way to fix the invisible energy that surrounds us." — Hoang Anh
