Description from the seller
Clemens Briels, born in Son in 1946, is a highly sought-after artist both nationally and internationally. His works are represented in several renowned art collections, and he was the first Dutch artist to be elected as Official Olympic Artist for the Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City in 2002.
Behind Clemens Briels’s artworks lies always a story; his works are small anecdotes from an opposing society. Briels developed his own style, ANTIPODISM: he prefers to imagine the opposite of the stereotype, the learned. The viewer is confronted with another, imaginative perspective on everyday things and is often taken by surprise as a result.
Briels portrays experiences he gained in the Orient, the Caribbean, and North and South America. In addition, traditional Central and South American music provides an almost inexhaustible source of inspiration. The Cuban son, mambo, merengue, and the souk—touched with a lightly erotic sauce—compel him to create intriguing paintings.
Clemens Briels’s works are never bound to a specific time and convey universal themes, cosmopolitan visions of everyday life. Briels translates his experiences in his own way, in his own unique fantasy world. Color is the tool; the story is his message. The artist stimulates the viewer’s imagination by presenting different images than those we are expected to see. Because stereotypes are learned by us, and not imaginative interpretations of the surrounding things and events, the viewer is bound to be surprised.
Dimensions with frame: 62 x 56 cm
Dimensions without frame: 33 x 29 cm
Viewing is, of course, possible. In addition, we have our own in-house frame-making workshop, which is celebrating its 85th anniversary. We also use restorers from the professional organization: Restauratoren Nederland. If you would like to make use of this, we would of course be happy to hear from you.
