Now available at auction from Second Vintage

The Seiko Lord Matic line represents a sweet spot in vintage Japanese horology, offering the sophisticated design language and advanced movements of its era. Positioned just below the King Seiko and Grand Seiko tiers, the LM series was designed for the discerning professional, featuring the highly capable 5600-series calibers. This particular example showcases a quintessential 1970s aesthetic with its elegant silver sunburst dial, sharp case lines, and the highly desirable Kanji day-date display, capturing the authentic spirit of Seiko's golden age of mechanical watchmaking.

Dial and Hands
The watch features a striking silver dial with a pronounced sunburst finish that catches the light beautifully. It is adorned with applied, faceted indices featuring black central stripes that enhance legibility. The applied "SEIKO" and "LM" logos, along with the Suwa factory symbol, add depth and dimension to the dial layout. A framed day-date aperture at three o'clock displays both English and Kanji days, a highly sought-after feature among collectors. Close inspection reveals minor, age-consistent spotting and dust particles scattered across the dial surface. The faceted dauphine hands, also featuring black central stripes, exhibit visible surface oxidation, spotting, and aging, which adds a distinct vintage character to the timepiece without compromising readability. Text at the bottom edge clearly reads "JAPAN 5606 -7001S".

Case and Crystal
The stainless steel case showcases a classic tonneau or C-shape profile characteristic of the 1970s, with smoothly integrated lugs and a prominent polished bezel. The case construction is a distinctive front-loading "open thru glass" design, as indicated by the caseback engravings. The surfaces display honest signs of wear, including superficial scratches and handling marks consistent with decades of use, though the overall geometry remains well-defined. The caseback is clearly stamped with the reference and serial numbers, along with the Suwa logo. The watch is fitted with a flat-form mineral crystal, which remains clear and legible, presenting well while showing only minor signs of use upon close examination.

Movement
Powering this timepiece is the Seiko Caliber 5606, a 23-jewel automatic movement renowned for its slim profile and reliable architecture. This caliber features both hacking and hand-winding capabilities, alongside a quickset mechanism for the day and date functions. Performing well within expected vintage tolerances; running strong and steady. Timegrapher results indicate a deviation of +30 to +36 seconds per day.

Strap
The watch is fitted with a contemporary black textured strap featuring contrasting white stitching. The strap complements the black accents on the dial and hands, providing a comfortable and stylish modern pairing for the vintage case.

Condition
This timepiece is presented in good vintage condition. It exhibits normal vintage wear, including moderate patina on the hands and minor spotting on the dial. The case retains its authentic shape with superficial scratches typical of a worn vintage watch. The overall appearance is highly attractive, offering a genuine and unpolished aesthetic that appeals to vintage enthusiasts.

Dimensions
The case measures 35 mm in diameter, excluding the crown. This classic mid-century sizing offers an elegant and understated presence on the wrist, making it highly versatile for both formal and casual settings.

Remarks
This Seiko Lord Matic is a wonderful representation of 1970s Japanese design, combining a robust mechanical movement with an elegant aesthetic. The presence of the Kanji day wheel and the beautifully aged hands make it a compelling piece for collectors seeking an authentic, daily-wearable vintage Seiko with true character.

History
Introduced in the late 1960s, the Seiko Lord Matic (LM) series was created to offer premium features and sophisticated styling to the upwardly mobile professional. Utilizing the advanced 5600 series movements, which were also adapted for King Seiko models, the LM line brought high-beat performance, slim profiles, and refined case designs to a broader audience. The series played a pivotal role in establishing Seiko's reputation for producing exceptionally well-made, reliable, and stylish automatic watches during a period of intense innovation in the watch industry.
