Description from the seller
Corneille (1922-2010) was a painter and graphic artist who, in the early fifties, radicalized the conservative Dutch art world. Together with five other influential artists, including Karel Appel and Constant, he co-founded in 1948 the post-war European Expressionist movement CoBrA. Corneille attended drawing and etching courses at the Academy of Visual Arts in Amsterdam between 1940 and 1942, but is generally considered an autodidact painter. Initially heavily influenced by Picasso's work, Corneille produced abstract work. From the late sixties, Corneille's work took on a more figurative character. In this work birds, women and flowers are often the subject.
