Description from the seller

Original copper engraving. 46 x 35 cm. Splendid numbered plate engraved in copper and finely hand-watercolored by a contemporary hand. From 'STORIA NATURALE DEGLI UCCELLI'. Edited by Saverio Manetti, Lorenzo Lorenzi and Violante Vanni, 1771-1776. Splendid original coloring. Curious plate taken from one of the most famous and attractive works of ornithology of all time. Perfect specimen. Pristine. Manetti, a physicist and director of the Florence Botanical Garden from 1749 to 1782, was responsible for the text, for the nomenclature of the species and for the distribution of the work. Abbot Lorenzo Lorenzi and Violante Vanni (one of the very few women to work in that field) drew the plates, engraved them on copper and hand-colored them. The result was the best and most extensive illustrated work produced up to that time. The publication was made possible thanks to the patronage of Marquis Giovanni Gerini.

Careful packing and shipping guaranteed.
