Description from the seller
This concerns an etching by Anton Franciscus Pieck (Den Helder, 19 April 1895 – Overveen, 24 November 1987), one of the most beloved Dutch artists of the twentieth century. Pieck worked as a painter, draftsman, etcher and graphic artist and gained wide recognition with his romantic depictions of an idealized, nostalgic past. His work is characterized by an exceptional eye for detail, atmospheric architecture and vivid scenes in which crafts, cityscapes and daily life from bygone times are central.
In the general public, Anton Pieck is mainly known as the designer of the famous Fairy Tale Forest in the Efteling, where his imaginative and romantic visual language is still visible today. He also enjoyed much appreciation as a book illustrator and could hold his own with the great English illustrators of the twentieth century. With his illustrations, he left a lasting imprint on the imagination of classic works of world literature in Dutch translation.
